Springfield Voters,
When you vote on November 6, you’ll see a proposal for a 1% sales tax increase in Sangamon County. This revenue can only be used to improve our school & athletic facilities.
Here’s what you’ll see on your Nov 6 ballot:
Shall a retailer’s occupation tax and a service occupation tax (commonly referred to as a “Sales Tax”) be imposed in Sangamon County at a rate of 1% to be used exclusively for school facility purposes?

What’s the problem with 186 school facilities?
- $98 million needed for short-term building maintenance
- 81% of District 186 schools are at least 50 years old.
- Currently, there are 28 mobile classrooms in use across the District.
- Outdated athletic facilities
What’s the solution?
Revenue from the proposed 1% sales tax increase:
- is the only means available to maintain and modernize District 186’s aging facilities.
- would amount to approximately $10 million annually for Springfield Public Schools.
- can only be used to improve school facilities.
What won’t be taxed?
- Unprepared foods (groceries)
- Prescriptions and over-the-counter medications
- Cars, trucks, ATVs, boats, RVs, and mobile homes
- Farm equipment, farm parts, and farm inputs
So what’s the cost?
- $100 of groceries = no increase
- $15,000 car/truck = no increase
- $50 of prescription medication = no increase
- $70 pair of shoes = 70 cents
- $7 of fast food = 7 cents
51 counties in Illinois have already taken advantage of this opportunity to strengthen their public schools. On November 6th, vote to join these surrounding counties. Check ‘YES’ for the future of our local schools, and for the future of our community!
